What was the best KISS you ever experienced?
by Terry inthe phone rang in the art gallery and i answered.. the voice was a young woman's.. one of her two parrots had died rather suddenly.. she wanted a colorful frame for the memorial portrait.
could we accomodate her?.
the remaining bird was sulking.. i suggested parrots without partners.. i don't where my tasteless jokes come from.

the one that I've never forgotten came when i was 16 years old, riding in the back of my friend's International Scout (lol), there was a group of about 5 or 6 of us going somewhere (can't remember where) and I was sitting next to this girl that I had just started "going with" and hadn't kissed yet. At one point i looked over at her and she at me and we went in for a kiss and it wasn't even a long one but whoa it was nice. She had the face of an angel, so so cute.

These "An end to <insert problem>" Afake! stories got to where they made my head hurt and I felt utterly ridiculous offering such sugar-coated nonsense to Householders™, knowing that the promised end to the problem-of-the-week according to JW beliefs means a massive apocalypse where bilions of people meet a violent death, coming very soon to a planet near you. Yeah they drop that one on you later.
The absurdity of it still makes my head spin. Not to even mention all the coded, between-the-lines counsel such articles contain for current dubs. ugh.

JWs become so heavily invested in JWism and all it entails that over time it becomes ever more difficult and frightening to even try to conceive of a life outside the Wretchtower walls. Put yourself in the shoes of a random JW that you know and imagine being that person and leaving the bOrg and creating a new, post-JW life for yourself. For me, that mental exercise drives home why so many JWs muddle through, year after year, decade after decade - JW culture has evolved in such a way that to leave it is a trauma that few inside are capable of going through. The prescribed, group-mind existence becomes so written into the mental circuitry of JWs that an independent, autonomous existence and it's accompanying lack of certainties and absolutes is simply unfathomable to your average dub.
So if you're one of the millions for whom leaving that sh!t is a mental and emotional impossibility, then you have just a couple of narrow choices. You can muddle along, putting in a few FS hours a month, work a normal job where for the most part you avoid discussing JWism (because deep inside, you KNOW it's weird but it works for you), and suffer from a guilt-stricken conscience for not doing enough and resign yourself to the fact that you "probably won't make it" (how many times have you heard that phrase come out of the mouths of JWs you know?)...OR.... you can keep the guilt at bay by giving yourself completely over to it and becoming as close to a "model" JW as you possibly can.

Your earliest doubt?
by Apognophos inthis might be an unfair question for those who have been out of the organization for decades, but i'm wondering if any of you remember your earliest doubt -- maybe something odd that occurred to you as a kid (if you were a jw then).
please try to limit to two doubts at the most :-).
i think my first "doubt" was simply realizing that at the time of the flood, every animal that wasn't in the ark died (well, besides the fish, supposedly).

I can't remember the exact specifics or even if it was my first doubt, but I do vaguely remember an article in the Watchtower, came out probably mid-late 90s. Basically the article took a scolding tone towards JWs who had gone to prison back in the day rather than accepting alternative service in lieu of the military draft. This was after they got new light on the issue of alternative service, and the scolding concerned the brothers "grumbling" about the new light. The most galling thing about the article was how it obfuscated the organization's role in the brothers refusal of alternative service, making it seem like it was strictly an individual choice. By that time I had been around long enough that I knew how the org worked, and it was perfectly clear to me that the brothers had refused alternative service because it was POUNDED into their heads that this was the ONLY acceptable choice in Jeehoober's eyes, and they would have been DF'd in a New York minute second had they performed alternative service. Again it was the way the article was worded that I just found unbelievable.

Huckabee and his ilk are similar to the JW types who constantly bemoan this "old system" we're living in, how bad things have gotten, how people have no morals anymore, etc.
I think that it takes an unsophisticated mind, one that romanticizes a too-fondly remembered past that really wasn't how they remember it, to conclude that to prevent tragedies such as this most recent one we need to Get Back to How Things Used To Be.
Huckabee would have grown up in the 1950s I think? A time when blacks were still being lynched in the very deep south? A time of racism, sexism, and mindless conformity? No thanks - for all it's problems and unspeakable tragedies, our current culture is better in so many ways than it was then. And even if you don't agree, there's still no way to graft a 1950s mindset onto modern society.
People harkening for an idealized past: one of the roots of totalitarianism.

JAN 2013 SHUNNING ARTICLE COULD MEAN JWS NOT AS OBEDIENT

the latest evidence is the january 2013 watchtower which rolls out hugely predictable statements about not doing anything to upset one's (jw) family by, for example, being in email contact with a disfellowshipped witness.
it's hard to stifle the yawns.

For the self-righteous, hardliner types who delight in giving the complete shun to any that have fallen off the righteous path, more smug satisfaction.
For the conscientious and sensitive types who don't delight in giving the complete shun, but who do it anyway out of a misguided sense of obedience, more internal suffering at the cruelty, and yet the seeming necessity of it.
For the conscientious and sensitive types who also don't delight in giving the complete shun and who just can't bring themselves to do it in a few select cases, guilt and shame.
For the non-hardcore, non-conscientious-and-sensitive types...more yawns.
